De laatste reden

De eerste keer dat ik boodschappen ging doen naar fruit vond ik lastig.
Ik had namelijk geen idee waar ik mee bezig was.
Ik had nul kennis van de vruchten en ik wist niet hoe te bepalen of iets rijp was of niet. 
Dat is inmiddels veranderd en ik weet beter waar op te letten. Platgeknepen vruchten laat ik nu lekker liggen en bananen koop ik het liefst zo groen mogelijk. Tenzij ik de bananen zo snel mogelijk wil opeten. Helaas halen ze de meest rijpe bananen altijd vroegtijdig uit de schappen.  Het punt dat ik wil maken is dat op de markt als je je er enige tijd bevindt, je er makkelijker je weg vindt. 

Voor de markt waar ik me nu op bevind geldt dat niet. De arbeidsmarkt is een verwarrende plek. Ik snap niet hoe het er werkt. Eerlijk gezegd wil ik dat ook niet. Ik wil liever aan de goede kant van de markt staan. Ik wil het product zijn en niet de afnemer. De afnemer heeft het zwaar, want de markt is verzadigd en de aanbieders willen een product hebben staan waar zij ook achter staan. Dus er zijn controles en de baan gaat niet zomaar naar de eerste de beste. Bij de Albert Heijn kun je het geluk hebben dat je net die ene precies rijpe avocado vindt en het in je mandje gooit en afrekent. Op de arbeidsmarkt kun je ook die baan vinden die bij je past en denken daar ga ik voor, maar dan kan het nog dat je bij de kassa te horen krijgt dat er nog vijf andere personen zijn geweest en er iemand tussen zat die al jarenlang avocado’s eet en dat ze het eigenlijk aan die persoon willen meegeven, want hij weet vast beter wat hij er mee moet. Sterker nog, voor je de winkel in mocht moest je een boodschappenlijst kwijt aan waarom je een avocado wilde kopen en daar hebben ze niets mee gedaan. Wel hebben ze gevraagd om aan te geven waar je voorheen boodschappen haalde en je mag uitleggen waarom je daar dan niet meer heen gaat. De reden kan van alles zijn. Ze zijn gaan inkorten op het assortiment, je hebt ontdekt dat ze dieronvriendelijk produceren, deze zaak is dichterbij, het zijn hufters. Van alles.
 
Wat jij op jouw beurt wil is jezelf zo aantrekkelijk mogelijk maken om de zaak in te mogen. Zij helpen je daar bij. Ze geven precies aan wat ze zoeken in hun afnemers. Een zogenaamd profiel. Dat zijn een aantal woorden waarvan ik de betekenis niet ken. Of ik ken ze wel, maar ik heb geen idee wat ze betekenen in de gegeven context. Termen zoals flexibiliteit, zelfstandigheid, dynamisch, ambitieus, leergierig, en zelfs professioneel.
Verwarrend, vind ik het. Een persoon die erg flexibel is, kijkt niet op van al te veel veranderingen en past zich daar op aan. Een zelfstandig persoon is juist in staat om in zo’n eventuele verandering te voorkomen en het op zijn manier te blijven doen. 
Een dynamisch persoon bestaat niet. Een dynamische werkomgeving wel, maar dat slaat vooral op de omloopsnelheid waarmee het personeel verandert en niet zo zeer de werkzaamheden. Waarom zou je adverteren dat de meeste mensen er niet blijven? 
Zou dat dan zijn vanwege de ambitieuze en leergierige personen die er terechtkomen? 
Als het zo’n rijke omgeving is voor ambitieuze en leergierige personen, waarom zijn zij dan ook zo snel weg. Valt er toch niet zo veel te leren of ben je zo snel uitgeleerd? Zijn de ambities te laag of juist te hoog? Of juist heel gematigd. 
Ik heb mijn visie mogen geven op al dat soort termen en uit het laatste gesprek dat ik gevoerd mocht hebben kreeg ik het volgende te horen: Ongetwijfeld dat jij een leidinggevende functie aan kan binnen de horeca, maar ik ben bang dat je een te vrije geest bent voor hier. 
Ik ben toen afgewezen op mijn intelligentie. Ik was gekwalificeerd, maar te slim. Ik ben na zesentwintig jaar nog aan het wennen aan discriminatie op geslacht en op afkomst. Eerlijk gezegd kan ik het nog niet aan om nu ook nog op intelligentie gediscrimineerd te worden. Vooral niet op het idee (te) slim te zijn, want dat is absoluut niet waar. 

Het laatste wat me verbaast aan deze markt dat ze in staat zijn zelfs het cliché te veranderen. De vraag is hetzelfde gebleven en het is een slechte vraag gebleven. Misschien is die vraag wel het antwoord op flexibiliteit, zelfstandigheid, ambitie, en vooral dynamiek.
Want het kan verklaren waarom je je moet kunnen aanpassen, je aangewezen bent op jezelf, je vooral moet blijven streven naar hogere doelen, en ook dat dingen zullen veranderen. 
De vraag die we kennen uit oude films ‘Waar zie jij jezelf over vijf jaar? Waar zie jij jezelf over tien jaar?’ 
Die vraag bestaat niet meer. Die vraag is tegenwoordig herzien tot ‘Waar zie jij jezelf over drie jaar.’ 
Dit is geen meting van je ambitie. Niet meer in elk geval. Dat was het toen ze het vroeger vroegen. Toen je een baan kreeg en je je daar kon ontwikkelen en jouw leidinggevende na vijf jaar ook hogerop zou kunnen. Zodat jij eventueel die plek kon innemen. Mocht je daar voor willen vechten. Mocht daar je ambitie liggen. Het is niet zo dat we in deze dynamische dagen datzelfde moeten ambiëren in een kortere periode. Het is wel zo dat we in een tijd leven waarin een contract voor onbepaalde tijd meestal moet worden uitgegeven na dat derde jaar. Grote kans dat je die niet zult krijgen. Dus dat is waar je open voor moet staan. Dat is wat doorgroeimogelijkheden betekent. Dat is waarom onze lijstjes met zaken waar we ooit zaken deden steeds langer worden. Kwalijk genoeg is het zo dat lange lijstjes gezien worden als een teken van gebrek aan loyaliteit. Te korte lijstjes juist een teken van roestigheid. 

En ik? Ik wil gewoon werken. In elk geval de komende drie jaar. Dan zien we het wel weer. Ik kan net zo min vertellen waar ik over drie jaar ben als dat zij beloftes kunnen maken over de markt over drie jaar. Ik kan hooguit in een profiel vallen. Leergierig dat ik ben, word ik op een dag dan hopelijk terecht slim genoemd om wat ik heb geleerd. Ambitieus dat ik ben vind ik mezelf wellicht op de juiste positie. Ontloop ik de dynamiek van ontslagen worden. Heb ik de vrijheid zelfstandig te werken.  Ben ik op een dag professioneel te noemen. 
 Tot die tijd moet ik mezelf elke keer weer in een winkel werken in de hoop dat ik dit keer naar buiten mag met een avocado en niet dat hij weer bij de kassa apart wordt gehouden. 
Dat ik klaar ben met deze draaideurtaferelen is overigens de laatste reden. Erover schrijven levert me namelijk ook niets op anders dan nog meer verwarring.

    What are you saying, man? I realize everyones got their own opinion, but really? Listen, your blog is awesome. I like the energy you put into it, specially with the vids and the pics. But, come on. Theres gotta be a better way to say this, a way that doesnt make it seem like everybody here is stupid!
